Yachts Launch Bid to Boost Tourism

Sailors from Scandinavia will be heading for a Northumberland harbour town this weekend, as a major new effort to create tourist links with the region is launched.

Norwegian yacht Avalon will set sail from her home port of Egersund today, heading for Amble on a goodwill mission to discuss ways of boosting the numbers of sailing trips from both sides of the North Sea.

Aboard will be the commodore of Egersund Sailing Club, Colin Kane, and on Monday evening he will meet partners from Sail East Coast UK and yachting enthusiasts from the region, including representatives from Amble Marina and Royal Quays Marina in North Shields.

Two days later, Amble-based yacht Medmerry II will accompany Avalon on the return journey, helping establish new sailing links between the North-East coast, Norway and Denmark.

Medmerry crew member Karen Brunton, who lives and works in Amble, said: "Marinas and harbours along our stretch of the coastline want to attract more overseas boats. …
