City's Ship Plays Host to Mayor

The Royal Navy's largest battleship HMS Ocean was flying the flag for the North-East yesterday during the International Fleet Review.

The review was attended by the Mayor of Sunderland, who was on board the city's affiliated ship HMS Ocean for the day.

Coun Bill Stephenson said: "The Mayoress and I were extremely honoured to be invited aboard HMS Ocean to witness this historic event and to represent Sunderland ( a city with a proud maritime heritage.

"The International Fleet Review creates an excellent opportunity to further strengthen the very positive relationship we have established with the Royal Navy and Ocean in particular. It promises to be an unforgettable experience."

HMS Ocean sailed to Portsmouth following a four-day goodwill visit to Sunderland this month when the ship's company took part in a spectacular Apache helicopter display on the flight deck and held an open-day for the public.

The ship's commanding officer Captain Tony Johnstone-Burt [correct] last night said he was thrilled to have had the Mayor and Mayoress on board for the historic event, which was last seen in 1977 during the Queen's Silver Jubilee year. …
