At law firm Eversheds' Newcastle office, lawyers are used to navigating around the world. Its award-winning team of shipping and international trade lawyers have drawn on the city's proud heritage to create the largest and the best-regarded full service shipping and international trade team outside the City of London.

At Lloyd's List's glittering annual award ceremony, proud Eversheds lawyers picked up Shipping Lawyers of the Year 2005 for their work on the Tasman Spirit casualty in Pakistan ( a case that involves the largest oil spill in Asia, the total loss of the ship and the infamous detention of eight hostages for nine months.

The team beat off competition from around the world to win the coveted prize with no fewer than eight of Eversheds' clients shortlisted for the 12 awards.

Chris Hilton, the Newcastle-born head of shipping and international trade at Eversheds, said: "We are delighted that the efforts and success of the team over the last 12 months have been recognised by our colleagues in the marine industry.

"As the Tasman Spirit illustrates, we are able to provide strength in depth by pulling together all of the relevant disciplines across our international network to handle even the biggest of international cases."

Eversheds' award marks the culmination of a particularly successful year for its shipping team: the high-profile of the Tasman Spirit work has led to other cases from across the world that have relied on the team's expertise and support, including a 20-ship collision in Bangladesh and the largest marine pollution incident in the United States since the much publicised ExxonValdez.

The Eversheds team draws on its own UK-based talent as well as the knowledge and experience of its partner offices in Brussels, Copenhagen, Shanghai and Qatar.

Chris Jobson, born in South Shields, is an Eversheds partner based in the Qatar office of A Rahman Mohamed Al-Jufairi Advocates & Legal Consultants, which has a formal co-operation agreement with Eversheds.

He explained why it is such a significant area to target: "I moved from the North-East to Qatar over a year ago as part of a strategic move for Eversheds to place itself at the heart of the new shipping world. …
