A Teesside pigeon breeder spoke today of his devastation after arsonists torched his lofts killing 81 birds.

Double heart bypass patient George Skidmore, 72, of Lingdale had only recently returned to the sport after undergoing treatment.

But today his hobby was in ruins after a blaze ripped through his three pigeon lofts killing his entire stock of birds.

Mr Skidmore said: "These people must have no conscience - it's just murder.

"The inferno was terrible. There's only about five or six stock birds left, which are just flying about in a panic as they cannot find their loft.

"It's definitely an arson attack," he said.

"The birds had had some good results in recent competitions including seconds and thirds in top races like the French Water Race.

"My grandson Michael, 22, has been helping me build up my stock again, but now I haven't got the years left to do it all again.

"I think this is pure vandalism and not by pigeon people as my birds weren't yet regular winners. …
