Trawler Boarded in Fishery Probe

A Whitby skipper and his crew have been detained by a Royal Navy protection vessel investigating alleged fishery offences.

A spokesperson for the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs, representing the Royal Navy, today said an official probe is continuing into alleged breaches by skipper Andrew Leadley and his crew of the Whitby trawler Success III.

The incident flared last week when Mr Leadley's boat was fishing amongst a fleet of German and Danish trawlers near Dogger Bank, about 90 miles off the Grimsby coast.

He is currently unavailable for comment.

But fellow skipper Richard Brewer, director of the Anglo Scottish Fish Producers, said he has told him what allegedly happened.

Mr Brewer said: "Crew from the Royal Navy vessel HMS Mersey boarded Andrew's boat.

"The boat's logs were inspected. Andrew told the sailors there was nothing wrong and resumed fishing.

"Then, after a message was received from the Royal Navy ship, personnel became confrontational. …
