No Need to Be Put off by Fees, Students Told

Teachers from around the region were at a conference yesterday to ensure they pass on accurate information to students about tuition fees.

Newcastle University held the conference for 100 teachers at The Sage Gateshead to explain tuition fees due to come into force at all universities next year, as well as its own package of bursaries.

The conference comes at a time when many people fear the pounds 3,000-a-year tuition fees due to be charged by most universities will deter some young people from considering higher education.

Universities have to use some of the extra income to provide bursaries for poorer students in an effort to widen access. Newcastle's director of student recruitment Lesley Braiden said: "In 2006 we will see the biggest change in student finances for many years.

"It is vital that schools and colleges have the correct information to give to students who are planning to go to university next year, so that they can make decisions that are right for them. …
