I wish to take this opportunity to publicly thank all the residents of Walker who have given their support to me during the period of time I have been subjected to abusive letters and telephone calls.

When I was first elected to represent Walker more than 17 years ago, I did not expect to receive many plaudits but neither did I expect to receive letters and

telephone calls of an abusive nature, slurs on my character and threats to my wellbeing.

I am committed to the regeneration of the Walker area and refuse to be intimidated by certain members of the community (both local and from outside the area) who put their own self interests first at the expense of those people who simply wish to live and work in a more pleasant environment.

The Walker area will only improve if people are prepared to work together and I will continue to campaign for the people I was elected to represent and hope those individuals who are responsible for the unsavoury tactics which have been used against me see their way to behaving in a more civilised manner.

Get priorities right on votes

It may be a good thing to make voting compulsory but it would be better to make it effective.

Preference voting in multi-member constituencies by single transferable vote ensures almost every vote counts and, if your first choice candidate does not need your vote it gets passed on to your second choice and so on.

This gives more power to the voters and less to the parties.

The question was met with a yawn by some Toon supporters and scorn by others.
