It wasn't the storybook ending the Jacksonville Suns were looking for to put a stamp on their late surge to the first-half pennant.

The Suns allowed two grand slams in a 20-2 loss to the Montgomery Biscuits on Sunday in front of 4,681 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

It was the third consecutive loss for the Suns since clinching the Southern League's South Division first-half title.

Following is an assessment of the Suns' first-half.

-- Hitting: The Suns went from eighth in hitting with a .259 average after 35 games to a .303 team average in the past 35 games and finished at .281, second in the league. They lead the league in homers (70), runs scored (370) and walks (273). The only negative is the team's total of 557 strikeouts. Grade: A-minus.

-- Pitching: The team ERA improved from 4.12 to 3.84. The starters struggled early, but, as a group, they improved, with Eric Stults earning a promotion to Triple-A. The bullpen was strong before this last series. …
