Stoicism amid Horror

Even as the nation struggled to come to terms with the death and destruction visited upon London yesterday, something remarkable was already happening.

Everyday life was ( as far as possible ( continuing as normal.

Central London, obviously, ground to a halt and the knock-on effects on the transport system were felt all over the country.

Even as Prime Minister Tony Blair was stating his belief that the people of Britain will not be intimidated by the string of terrorist bombings, there was ample evidence of this stance.

We are, of course, no strangers to terrorist attacks and Mr Blair was right to underline this by telling the nation: "It is through terrorism that the people that have committed these terrible acts express their values and it is right at this moment that we demonstrate ours."

So, while the emergency services did their work, the security services did theirs and we all stopped and sympathised with the victims, the country kept moving. …
