Graeme Souness sent his best wishes to Darren Ambrose after the midfielder joined Charlton Athletic in search of first team football.

The former Ipswich Town midfielder completed a pounds 1.5m move to The Valley yesterday after two-and-a-half years at St James' Park.

Ambrose (pictured) knew he would find his chances limited next season, despite impressing during a late season run under Souness.

And the 21-year-old leaves with the high regard of Souness and chairman, Freddy Shepherd, unlike former team-mates Craig Bellamy and Laurent Robert, whose St James' Park careers ended in acrimony.

"Darren's a genuinely good lad, like Andy O'Brien and Aaron Hughes, who have also left the club," said Souness.

"We're sorry to see them go but to be fair to those lads I thought it was the best thing for the club." Shepherd added: "Everyone at Newcastle would like to wish Darren Ambrose well for the future. He is a smashing lad and he has been a model pro during his time at the club. …
