Tour Will Help Me Claim No 1 Jersey ( Davis

Kelvin Davis is determined to capitalise on his advantage in the challenge for goalkeeping supremacy on Wearside after predicting a stiff challenge for the number one jersey on his return from North America, writes Paul Gilder.

Although Mart Poom is not expected to travel with Sunderland's first-team squad to Vancouver tomorrow having suffered yet another recurrence of his lingering knee complaint, the player expected to start between the posts when the new Premiership campaign begins on August 13 is taking nothing for granted. Davis will have four games on the club's pre-season tour of Canada and the United States in which to showcase his talents and establish himself as Mick McCarthy's first-choice pick.

But, although his top-flight future would appear to be in his own hands, the goalkeeper voted the finest outside the top flight by his fellow professionals last term knows that Poom's troubles will only serve to increase the appetite of a player sidelined for nine months to revive his stalled career.

"I know what it is like to be injured, it is horrible and no-one wants it to happen," said Davis who, having arrived from Ipswich this summer, could prove to be one of the shrewdest signings of McCarthy's reign.

"It is awful having to miss games and having to watch someone else doing your job, especially at a time like this.

"But Mart will be back ( I have seen enough of him in the last week to know that. His attitude towards training is unbelievable and he will get himself fit again quicker than anyone else in his position could.

"He is determined to get himself right and I have no doubts that he will do it. I have a good chance to show what I can do on this tour but I'm expecting to come back to find Mart determined to take the shirt from me.

"I just have to make sure I do enough to get into the side and stay there. I'm sure that there will be a strong challenge from Mart but I'm not frightened of challenges. …
