MP Joins Battle to Save Soccer Starlet

A petition to keep a rising African soccer starlet on Tyneside has been handed over to MP Jim Cousins.

Pals of Danilo Cadete have collected 1,000 signatures begging the Home Office to let the 14-year-old stay in Cowgate, Newcastle.

Danilo fled death threats in Angola, where his father was murdered, and settled here with his mum and younger brother.

But their asylum claim has been rejected and they are set to be booted out of Britain and back to the country, devastated by years of war.

The youngster has been tipped for football fame and likened to ex-Toon star Tino Asprilla by his coaches.

His bid to stay on Tyneside has been backed by Newcastle Central Labour MP Jim Cousins.

And after meeting Danilo and his family on Friday, Mr Cousins now plans to hand over the petition to Immigration Minister Tony McNulty.
