Hundreds of petitioners have backed a campaign to support a major port development on Teesside.

PD Ports is planning a pounds 300m deep sea container terminal for Teesport which could eventually create up to 7,000 jobs in the local economy.

The company is calling on the Government to fast-track its plans to provide an economic boost to the region.

Residents group Redcar Road West Action Group and community organisation South Bank Tomorrow have backed the proposals saying they are vital to the future of jobs on Teesside. The groups are now collecting signatures for a petition to be presented to Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman MP at his meeting between ports bosses and Redcar MP Vera Baird later this month.

Nettie Moffoot, chairwoman of Redcar Road West Action Group, said: "There has been a good response and I think I've collected about 500 or 600 names so far, and that doesn't include petitions that are at the port or at British Steel. …
