Padraig Pulls out after His Father's Death; Irish Star 'Devastated' by Bereavement

PADRAIG HARRINGTON withdrew from The Open today following the death of his father.

A former policeman, Patrick Harrington, 72, was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in March, the week after his son captured his first US Tour title.

He died last night.

Harrington did not play in last week's Scottish Open and rather than travel to St Andrews early, he stayed in Dublin because his father's condition had worsened.

A spokesman for his management group IMG said the player was "devastated" by the news.

Harrington was rated Europe's best hope of a first major win since Scotland's Paul Lawrie at the Carnoustie Open in 1999 but a close friend said: "I'm sure Padraig will want to go home."

Just over two weeks ago, Harrington gave his dad a belated Father's Day present when he sunk a 65ft putt at the last hole to win the Barclays Classic from Jim Furyk in Westchester, New York. It was his second win of the year in America, following his triumph in the Honda Classic in Florida four months ago and he confirmed his form last week when he shot a course-record 63 on the way to victory in the starstudded JP McManus Invitational at the Adare Resort near Limerick. …
