The North-East has waited a long time for more European Tour success.

Kenneth Ferrie and Graeme Storm, who both tee up tomorrow in the Open Championship at St Andrews, are setting new standards for a region that, frankly, has failed to deliver on a regular basis at the top level. But I think that is all set to change.

There are a clutch of young players coming through the amateur ranks and the college system both here and in the USA who will step up to the mark in the next few years.

Look out for names like James Curry, Mark Wharton, Tom Maddison, Ricky Lee, Chris McDonnell, Paul Fiddes and many more.

Ashington's 26-year-old Ferrie is the North-East's first winner since David Whelan in the Barcelona Open in 1988.

The North-East's success on the national scene has largely been at amateur level in the shape of Gordon Clark, Harry Ashby, Peter Deeble, David Curry and, of course Ferrie and Storm before they turned pro. …
