HILLIARD -- There's more to the Fourth of July in Hilliard than the rockets' red glare above the Hilliard Airpark.

Festivities will begin Monday morning with a YMCA "Fun Run and Walk" and will continue through the day with live music, vendors, children's activities and a car show, and end with the aerial display at nightfall.

Hilliard Action Committee member Ann Buchanan said her group has worked to make the town's holiday an all-day event.

"All up and down the runway, there will be food concessions, patriotic novelty items, sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers and snow cones," Buchanan said.

Many of the vendors represent non-profit organizations. The Greater Nassau County Chamber of Commerce will provide activities for children, including an inflatable "bouncer," face-painting and more.

About 8,000 to 10,000 spectators turned out to watch the town's fireworks display last year, Buchanan said. Many parked their cars and watched through their windshields, but organizers hope to coax them out to the airpark field this year, she said.

"People need to get out of their cars and look around. It's a nice leisure day. Bring blankets, lawn chairs and family and come listen to the music. It's a nice safe family environment and a great way to enjoy the day. It's something the town of Hilliard really looks forward to."

The airpark events are family-oriented and no alcohol will be sold, Buchanan said.

Monday's full day of events kicks off at 8 a.m. with the inaugural Hilliard Family YMCA "Fun Run and Walk." Proceeds underwrite a YMCA program that pays for swimming lessons and other programs to children who can't afford to participate.

Holiday events at the Hilliard Airpark begin at 1 p.m. with the second annual July Fourth Festival Car and Truck Show. The event will benefit the Mount Charity Baptist Church. …
