Shearer Stakes a Claim for Goal No 193

Alan Shearer has claimed Newcastle United's second goal in yesterday's 3-1 Intertoto Cup victory over Dubnica in Slovakia and is now just seven short of equalling Jackie Milburn's record for the club.

There was plenty of doubt whether United's second goal in the sixth minute should go to Charles N'Zogbia, go down as an own or be credited to Shearer.

And when I asked the United skipper after the game whether he was claiming it, he joked: "How long have you known me?

"The ball took a deflection and was looping into the net and I thought I got to it just as it was about to cross the line.

"I spoke to the referee and he said he thought it was my goal so that's good enough for me. He's happy enough to give it to me so try and take it off me."

Shearer's goal was his 29th in Europe for United in 46 games and takes him nicely on to 193, which leaves Milburn's record of 200 well and truly in his sights.

But Shearer insisted: "What my goal and those from Michael Chopra and James Milner have done is to set us up nicely for the second leg with Dubnica at St James' Park on Saturday. …
