Police Calling Mayport Woman's Death a Homicide

Jacksonville police said Friday the April death of a Mayport woman in an apartment fire is being investigated as a homicide.

Tonja Phillips, 32, was found dead after a 7 a.m. fire tore through her building in the 1200 block of Wonderwood Drive on April 5.

Firefighters broke into a first-floor window and found the woman dead in a front bedroom, authorities said.

Other details about the cause of death were not released.

HOTEL ATM ROBBED OF $36,000

Someone stole $36,000 from an automated teller machine inside Jacksonville's Hyatt Regency Hotel after removing a door on the machine and drilling a hole in a lock, police said.

The theft was reported to police about 7 p.m. Thursday, nearly 24 hours after the machine's last cash withdrawal was recorded, a Sheriff's Office report said.

The machine was next to a gift shop and the employee entrance on the first floor, according to police. The hotel is at 225 Coast Line Drive E.

POLICE IDENTIFY SHOOTING VICTIM

Police on Friday identified a woman shot to death outside a Jacksonville apartment complex Monday as a 54-year-old Arlington resident.

Authorities found the body of Mary White of the 5300 block of Arlington Expressway inside Oakwood Villa Apartments at 8201 Kona Ave. about 1 a.m. Monday.

Police went to the scene after reports of gunshots, a Sheriff's Office report said.

White was shot about a block from the complex, then ran inside Oakwood Villa looking for help, according to police.

She died at the scene, police said.

Two people were arrested Friday after Flagler County authorities said they seized 124 marijuana plants in a Palm Coast home.
