Sea monsters, skeletons, dolphins and mermaids have been spotted at a Tyneside lighthouse.

Pupils from Downhill School in South Shields dressed up to act out an epic poem they have written, called The Mermaid of Marsden Bay.

They performed it at Souter Lighthouse in Whitburn as part of the borough's Festival of the Sea.

Downhill's head Elizabeth Phillips said: "The tale was expertly told through a dance and drama. Parents have also worked with professionals from Northern Stage to make fabulous costumes.

"This has been a real whole-school community celebration of professional standards. It's hard to believe these performers are only six and seven."

The Festival of the Sea was held as part of the Sea Britain national maritime celebrations.

Downhill School will also be hosting the Horsley Hill Fun Day this Saturday between 11am and 3pm in Dorset Avenue.
