Courageous councillor Barbara Harpham is bracing herself to leap from a plane in aid of a national heart charity.

The Redcar and Cleveland councillor, who represents Saltburn Ward, is national director of Heart Research UK.

And in a leap of faith next Friday, she will do a fundraising tandem parachute jump with the world famous Red Devils air display team.

Her fall from 13,000ft should raise at least pounds 1,000 for research into heart disease - still the UK's biggest killer.

And to keep it in the family, she's dragging niece Rosie and her boyfriend, Jay, along to take the plunge.

Now fingers are crossed for good conditions after bad weather forced her parachute jump to be postponed from June.

She said: "I know from a solo jump on a static line I did from 3,000 ft, the worst part is the land speeding towards you.

"I've had great support from my council colleagues. I think they feel sorry for the poor Red Devil that has to listen to me talking all the way down. …
