Clor Clor Difficult to believe that the south London five-piece recorded this extraordinary debut in their guitarist's bedroom. Although their influences - electro, house, punk and glam rock - are worn on their sleeves, the end result is somehow utterly compelling. On Gifted, singer Barry Dobbin's voice takes on the reedy quality of the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, and with its winsome lyrics and minimal guitar work, it has just as much poignancy.

On current single, Outlines, a sparse electro beat, old-school synthesiser stabs and Dobbin's deadpan vocals are reminiscent of Gary Numan's early-Eighties work. But with Clor's deft touch, the electronic sounds become more housey, the beats and guitars more rocky, and before you know it, a splendidly spunky track is in full flow.

Love & Pain is another standout.

Vocally and guitar-wise, it owes much to Bowie's Suffragette City, but it possesses a raw electronic edge and, like the rest of the album, succeeds against the odds.

Melodically sophisticated, brilliantly produced and packed with energy, derivative pop music has never sounded so good.

Bob Mould Body of Song (Cooking Vinyl) Bob Mould hasn't yet gone the way of the Pixies, Jane's Addiction or Dinosaur Jr and reformed his equally influential Eighties alt-rockers H'sker D', but this sixth solo album is still a step backwards.

After a few years spent experimenting unsuccessfully with electronica as LoudBomb, he's finally cracked open the guitars again and come up with a recording that, while pleasant enough, never matches the power of his first band or even his early Nineties trio, Sugar.

Tracks such as Missing You and Underneath Days have strong, melodic choruses, while Days of Rain is a pretty, minimal ballad.

But Mould hasn't abandoned the computers completely and often, particularly on the dreadful (Shine Your) Light Love Hope, he electronically treats his voice until he sounds like Cher with a beard. On this evidence he might be better off swallowing principles, reuniting H'sker D' and accepting that his best years are behind him. …
