THIS is just what London needs right now: a little spontaneous fun.

Courtesy of the Magic Numbers, one of the hottest (and certainly one of the hairiest) bands in pop, several hundred Londoners enjoyed a surprise free concert last night.

Gig-goers were alerted to the performance by text message.

Yesterday morning, none of the lucky crowd knew it was happening. Then at around midday, the following text message dropped in mobile phone inboxes around the capital: "U cld get urself & a mate FREE invites to the filming of a private gig 4 the Magic Numbers in London 2day."

A few hours later, and barely 90 minutes before the gig started, a second message was sent out by the telecommunications company with details of where to be (the car park behind 93 Feet East, a fashionable club in Brick Lane) and when (an unfashionable 6pm).

Several hundred fans took up the offer from T-Mobile which built on the "flash-mobbing" phenomenon, where people are alerted to events by text. …
