Newcastle United will offer to bring Jonathan Woodgate back to St James' Park after hearing reports from Madrid that their former central defender is ready to quit the game.

The Real Madrid player is considering retiring after suffering a serious relapse in his recovery from the thigh injury he sustained playing for United at the end of the season before last.

He has not kicked a ball in earnest for the Spanish club since he went to the Bernabeu in a pounds 13.8m move 12 months ago.

When I broke the news to Freddy Shepherd in La Coruna today he said: "I'm shocked and sad to hear this.

"But I can tell Woody that there will always be a place for him at St James' Park. We will do anything we can for him ( and I mean anything.

"Obviously there will be all sorts of complications, compensations and insurances to sort out, but if his contract is cancelled and he is able to, we will bring him back here without any pressure and we will do all we can for him. …
