Claridge Sacked; Lee Is New Millwall Boss as Steve Goes after Month

STEVE CLARIDGE was dismissed as Millwall manager today, with Colin Lee immediately appointed as his successor.

It is only five weeks since Claridge was confirmed as Dennis Wise's replacement, but it is understood that several board members were unhappy with the appointment.

Claridge's position was made more precarious two weeks later when Jeff Burnige resigned as chairman just two months after taking over from Theo Paphitis.

Burnige's decision to stand down effectively handed control to Paphitis again, and the former Millwall chairman acted quickly to replace Claridge with Lee.

Lee, who has managed at Watford, Wolves, Torquay and Walsall, said today he had expected to be offered a coaching role.

He said: "It was a decision nobody really expected. Steve was going to ask them if I could help out with the coaching on a non-contract basis.

"I left Steve with Theo Paphitis and set off back to the midlands after the game with Gillingham last night. Steve wanted to get the permission of the board to take me on, and the meeting ended with his being dismissed. …
