SIR ALEX FERGUSON bemoaned his side's inability to convert their chances as Manchester United suffered their first preseason defeat of the summer in Tokyo today.

Kashima Antlers striker Masashi Motoyama scored either side of an equaliser by Ryan Giggs in a match which was hit by a mini-earthquake midway through the first half.

The tremor, whose epicentre was more than 100 miles away from the Japanese capital and measured 2.0 on the Richter Scale, rattled the stadium but play continued.

Although United were beaten they should have won with Louis Saha, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney and Park Ji-Sung all guilty of wasting opportunities.

"After the first few minutes we dominated the game and had an awful lot of chances," said United manager Ferguson. "In the main I was happy with the quality.

"We created a lot of chances and the movement was good, especially in the second half.

"But hopefully we are not going to miss as many as that in the Champions League - it was like the FA Cup Final [where United dominated Arsenal but lost on penalties]. …
