Worldwide Crew Waves Them Off

They came from all over the world to see the Tall Ships off from the Tyne.

Dieter Foch, 28, a computer analyst and his wife Ingrid, 27, an English teacher from Munich, Germany, joined large crowds at the Spanish Battery to watch the ships leave.

Dieter said: "We were in England on holiday and when we heard the Tall Ships were in Newcastle we decided to come. We arrived on Sunday and have really enjoyed it.

"The atmosphere has been wonderful. We love the quaysides in Newcastle and Gateshead. It is very impressive."

Ingrid said: "There has been so much going on and it is nice that so many nationalities have come together for this event. It is our first visit to Newcastle. We have been made very welcome and the city is beautiful. I feel sure we will come back."

Backpackers Ally Harding, 21, and her friend Chris Braekemar, 24, had come 13,000 miles from Geelong, Melbourne, Australia.

Ally said: "We're spending six months backpacking around Europe and when we heard the Tall Ships were in Newcastle decided to come and take a look.

"We arrived last weekend and it's been fantastic. There's been so much going on and everyone has been really friendly. We were told we had to come to Tynemouth to see the ships off. We got here about 8am and there's a really good party atmosphere. I just wish it was warmer ( I'm frozen."

Rick Schofield, 62, a retired engineering manager at a nuclear power plant, and Tom Jetton, 69, a former public affairs manager for power firm Enron, both travelled from Nebraska, USA. Rick said: "We have come over specially for the Tall Ships.

"We arrived in Newcastle on Sunday and we are now going to stay with friends of Tom's at Hexham. We sail together, so when we heard the Tall Ships were on in Newcastle we said, `We've never seen them, let's go'. …
