Last year's Lanchester Early Music Festival was a resounding success, and the 2005 series of events, extended to run July to September, promises to repeat the triumph.

Organised by organist, harpsichordist and flautist Ian Brunt, most of the concerts will be based at All Saints' Church in the County Durham village.

All the programmes will be interspersed with readings from contemporary journals, eyewitness accounts and letters of the period relating to the works being performed, and all the proceeds will go to church funds.

The first concert in the festival is tomorrow, starting at 7.30pm and entitled An Evening at the Palace of Reason.

Dr Brunt, on harpsichord and organ, will be joined by flautist Brian Stewart to perform the complete sonatas for transverse flute by Bach.

The second concert, on Saturday, August 13, is entitled Bohemian Fifths and features Dr Brunt performing keyboard works by the early composers of central Europe. …
