Cleveland County Ladies and Men's Associations held their combined finals at Ropner Park last weekend.

The two-day event was well supported and the spectators were treated to some highly competitive bowling.

On Saturday Richard and Ian Serginson, Martin Whitfield and Nigel Routledge (KBC) came from 16-14 down to win 22-16 to take the four-bowl title against Bill Hall (Elm Tree).

The KBC foursome had lost in four previous finals.

The KBC trio of Stan Smith, Brian Lawson and Charlie Henderson beat Derek Doe (Saltburn) 17-14 in their very first year in the county competitions.

Vi Mitcheson, Sheila Moremon and Inge Gillespie (Smiths Dock) scored seven shots in the last two ends to take the ladies three-bowl title from Sandra Pickup (Loftus) with a score of 20-17.

Jackie Carson, Sally Pass and Di Smart (Elm Tree) won the two-bowl rinks with a 22-15 win over C Willgrass, M Judson and G Horsley (Burn Valley).

The afternoon was given over to singles matches.

Isabel Cadiz (West End) took the ladies Champion of Champions with a 21-11 win over Mary Johnson (Thornaby).

Noreen Fleming (Elm Tree) beat Sally Pass (Elm Tree) 21-12 in the ladies senior singles.

Joan Shaw (Elm Tree) took the ladies four-bowl title, recording the first of a number of 21-20 wins that occurred over the weekend when she beat Jackie Carson (Elm Tree).

Brian Lewis (Thornaby) took the men's Champion of Champions at his third attempt by winning 21-18 against Dave Wood (Skelton).

The match of the session was the men's senior title which featured Rob Jones (Elm Tree) against Alan Birks (Ropner Park). Jones led 16-8 at one stage but Birks fought his way back into a 20-19 lead only to lose two shots on the last end to give Jones a 21-20 win and another crack at the national title that he won for Cleveland last year.

In the final session of the day, Barbara Richards (Nunthorpe) beat Sandra Pickup (Loftus) 21-7 in the secretaries singles. …
