Briere Set to Take over from Teskey

Steve Briere has emerged as the man likely to start as netminder in Newcastle Vipers' debut season in ice hockey's Elite League.

With the departure of Canadian Doug Teskey (pictured above) confirmed this week, player-coach Rob Wilson is believed to be lining up his compatriot Briere as a replacement. However Briere is not the only netminder the Vipers are believed to be in talks with.

The 28-year-old Fife Flyers goalie has made his availability known to Wilson after three seasons in Scotland.

With the break-up of the BNL, Fife still do not know which league they will be playing in next season.

With Edinburgh Capitals having already signed Slovak Martin Kucera to play between the pipes for them next term, Briere is thought to be interested in a move to the North-East.

The Vipers have spent the summer accumulating the top talent from last season's British National League, which they competed in, and Winnipeg-born Briere falls into that category. …
