Festival's Tempo Steps Up

Sounds of the American Mid-West brought a toe-tapping touch of musical sunshine to the streets of Alnwick yesterday, as the Northumberland town's international song and dance festival gathered pace.

The event, which ends on Saturday, is so far a roaring success, with the Market Place welcoming big crowds .

Among the performers to take to the stage for yesterday's packed programme of worldwide entertainment were two groups from the USA, as well as from nations as diverse as Latvia, Spain, Hungary, France and Poland.

Singers from the Minnesota Choral Theater delivered a variety of pieces from their repertoire, including a song in Russian ( native tongue of its director Dr Albert Grotell.

Meanwhile, banjo and fiddle outfit Mock Turtle Soup showcased their distinctive talents, with an array of traditional Americana and the odd Mexican waltz and Irish jig thrown in for good measure.

Festival chairman John Moodie said: "We have some truly outstanding acts this year and each day brings something new and exciting to the Market Place stage. …
