Striker-light Newcastle saw their UEFA Cup hopes extinguished as they crashed out of the Intertoto Cup at St James' Park last night.

A string of missed chances then a schoolboy error in defence cost the Geordies dearly as they lost 2-1 to Deportivo La Coruna for a 4-2 aggregate semi-final defeat.

With pounds 11m newboys Emre and Scott Parker making their debuts in midfield Newcastle started brightly and James Milner put them ahead on 39 minutes as he got to a Lee Bowyer cross.

But Deportivo pulled level on the stroke of halftime as Andrade beat Shay Given to a flick-on into the box and coolly lobbed the ball over the keeper.

Then soon after the restart, Newcastle gifted Deportivo a winner as a poor Robbie Elliott backpass let Munitis in to feed Tristran and when his shot was blocked by Stephen Carr, Munitis was on hand to score.

Newcastle had plenty of possession, but glaringly lacked a cutting edge leaving under-pressure boss Graeme Souness desperate to find a partner for ageing warhorse Alan Shearer. …
