The buzzer has been king this week at Sharpley Springs with black and rainbow patterns producing the best results.

Adam McDonough from Durham, fishing the Doxford Lake, took a 13lb 8oz rainbow on a Black Buzzer fished on floating line.

Bob Lake safely returned fin-perfect fish of 11lb 8oz and 7lb while D Mills had one of 5lb ( all on Black Buzzers.

Meanwhile, Rainbow Buzzers helped Gordon Grear net 25 fish, including fish of 10lb 8oz, 7lb and 6oz.

England Youth Team member and Trout Tickler Scott Nellings from Ashington safely returned a fine 10lb 8oz rainbow.

William Slater of Newton Aycliffe and first time visitor to the complex Malcolm Donnelly each landed a tagged fish worth pounds 500. John Dixon of Gosforth, fishing a Cat's Whisker on a 4lb leader, landed the week's biggest fish at 14lb 2oz.

Tom Scorer of Seaham, fishing the challenging Sharpley water, landed a great fighting rainbow of 7lb 12oz ( on a Viva.

An open competiton is being held at Sweethope Loughs today August 5 from 5pm to dusk ( with all proceeds going towards the Lord Devonport Disabled Anglers' Challenge that will be held at the fishery on August 27.

The top prize in the competition for the heaviest bag of six fish will be 10 free fishing sessions. Junior anglers are also reminded of Monday's competition at Langley Dam.

There are still a few places available and anyone interested should contact the fishery on (01434) 688846.

The biggest fish of the week at Langley, at 8lb 2oz, was brought to the net by Michael Airey who also had the week's best bag with four for 15lb 2oz.

Higham Lake, closed last week for the removal of weed and the fitting of a new water pump, had a magnificent re-opening with John Greenwell of Blyth landing the fishery's resident "giant" brown trout. John, fishing a Grey Zonker, took more than 30 minutes to land the fish that weighed 25lb 2oz when brought to the net last season. It was quickly returned. …
