New Brett Blow; Aussie Bowler Told He Must Stay in Hospital

BRETT LEE is to spend a second night in hospital - making him an even bigger doubt for Thursday's third Ashes Test at Old Trafford.

Australia had hoped their spearhead fast bowler, who is struggling with a knee infection, would be released this morning and join the rest of the squad in Manchester.

Instead, doctors in Birmingham want him to spend at least another 24 hours in hospital and, despite trying to sound optimistic, the tourists must now expect to face England on what promises to be a hard, bouncy Old Trafford pitch without their fastest bowler.

Already without ankle injury victim Glenn McGrath and having been pulled back to 1-1 in the Ashes series by England's two-run victory at Edgbaston, Australia today called up Stuart Clark, an uncapped paceman who played for Middlesex last week.

"Brett was seen by doctors this morning and they are happy with the progress of the treatment that has been administered so far," said Aussie physio Errol Alcott. …
