Stop Red Star!

Article excerpt

Liverpool shouldn't hold too many fears for us at the Riverside on Saturday - provided we can stop Steven Gerrard.

The England midfielder has been in unbelievable form this summer.

Fair do's to him, he's sorted out his future, he's a home town boy who's stuck with his local club and he's done the business for them since he signed his new contract.

Gerrard has been on fire in front of goal. He's got seven goals already in their European games.

So it's pretty clear that we have to make sure he doesn't score again on Saturday.

Gerrard apart, I haven't seen anything that tells me that Liverpool are any better than us, though they will be more match fit than us because they've already played five games in Europe.

Liverpool weren't any better last season. They got some terrific results in Europe and deserved everything they got, but they weren't any better in the league.

And they'll come here looking out for what we can do.

They know all about Yakubu because they've played against him before. They know he scores goals.

Yakubu hasn't been as impressive as Gerrard in pre-season, but he's at a new club and he's settling in.

He scored his first goal for the Boro from the penalty spot, and he's still waiting for his first goal in open play.

It could easily have come against Espanyol on Sunday.

Yakubu looked hungry and that's a great sign in a striker.

His movement was good, he held the ball up well and he passed it well. In fact, he should have scored, because he had a few good chances.

But you know that the goals will come from him because he's done it in the past.

The only thing I didn't like was the way in which Yakubu drifted out wide on occasions.

He put over some great crosses, but he needs to be on the end of those crosses, and he can't do both.

Hasselbaink is likely to partner him on Sunday. I think this would have happened whether he scored against Espanyol or not.

The great thing is that we will have two men up front with good goalscoring records and that will give Rafa Benitez plenty to think about. …
