It was a close-run thing in the final of The Journal Golf Classic, sponsored by Lycetts, at Slaley Hall's Priestman course.

In the end there was just one point in it yesterday as Bedlingtonshire Golf Club held off the challenge of Domnick Hunter Ltd.

Bedlingtonshire's total of 106 points was a great score over a long Priestman course.

And they can thank team leader Ian Turner, who weighed in with 40 points after rushing from Matfen Hall where he had been caddying for Kenneth Ferrie in the Northern Rock NorthEast Masters.

Turner had 21 points on the front nine and 19 coming back, playing off four, and that was also good enough to clinch the individual prize.

He had great support from Kevin Cannon and brother Bryan, who both had 33, while even their non-counter Craig Taylor, who also played off four, had 32 points.

Russell Holness led the way with 36 with a back nine of 19 points and former Northumberland County player John Oakley, playing off scratch, came up with 35, again with 19 on the inward nine.

But then Alan Brown's 34 points as the third counter was just agonisingly short and he will be rueing a no-score on the par-five 16th, the hardest hole on the course.

John Oakley Jnr weighed in with 28 points which would not have been enough had the sides tied with Taylor's very good 32, but Bedlingtonshire knew they had been in a battle.

This time around Bedlingtonshire will be off to Spain to sample the delights of Hacienda del Alamo, the new jewel in the Murcia crown.

Bedlingtonshire will now get the chance to play the first of three superb 18-hole championship golf courses on a site which also has 550 luxury villas along with a golf academy and driving range. Within five years that will have grown to 4,000 villas, 400 luxury apartments and a five-star hotel on the impressive site. …
