Drivers are facing more motoring misery with further city centre road closures.

Commuters will suffer increased delays when lane closures are imposed over a 200-metre stretch on New Bridge Street, near its junction with Gibson Street and Clarence Street.

The dual carriageway will be reduced to one lane.

The changes are to allow essential maintenance work on the bridge over the Metro line. It will start on Sunday and is expected to last around 10 weeks.

Drivers are being warned to expect delays in the area and plan their journeys accordingly. The work is being carried out by the city council's engineering services on behalf of Nexus.

Chris Chandler, director of Newcastle-based Noda Taxis, said: "The lane closures will make things more difficult.

"There are already problems with the closure of the High Level Bridge and traffic congestion at the Swan House roundabout, as well as other work going on. …
