The dumping of till receipts in a back alley on Teesside is the latest disturbing evidence of the lack of financial security facing us all.

The nature of our day to day monetary dealings, be they on the Internet, at the hole-in-the-wall or across the counter of stores, is such that personal banking details are disclosed in one form or another.

The gain for us is that we are less likely to carry cash which can be lost or stolen. The downside is that this information can be used to weedle a way into the bank vaults where everyone's money lies.

So it is imperative that the convenience we enjoy from this system is counter-balanced by safeguards that protect us from fraudsters and thieves.

It is little use for individuals to take precautions if large stores do not play their part.

All 17 people, whose details were left in the street for anyone to find, are extremely lucky that the person rifling through the rubbish bag was an environmental enforcement officer. …
