Lee Clark came within a whisker of "the greatest day of my career" when he almost scored the winner in Saturday's disappointing goalless draw with West Ham, (writes ALAN OLIVER).

Clark was foiled by West Ham keeper Roy Carroll when he came off the bench to a truly tremendous reception.

No wonder the Geordie boy was able to joke: "To think I only came back to get my boots cleaned three and a half weeks ago."

But the former Fulham skipper was more serious when he added: "If I had managed to score the winner that would have been the greatest moment of my career.

"But even if I had been involved in the winning goal it would have been fantastic. Alan Shearer said after the game that Carroll pushed my shot across the face of the goal but if he had done what most keepers do and knocked it straight out it would have given him a tap in from two yards. …
