Walker Cops a Trophy Triumph

Article excerpt

Former National 10 and 25-mile silver medallist Harry Walker continued his late start to the season when he took first places in both Northumbria Police CC events comprising the Mike Urwin Trophy.

Walker beat last year's winner Mike Harris, who took both victories last year, into second place in the 10, while Simon Campbell squeezed between Walker and Harris in the 25.

After minimal training combined with a few midweek 10s, Walker's 20th place in June's National 50-mile Championships at Stockton raised a few eyebrows although events have been limited since then.

His performance in the 25, though, was in far from ideal conditions and in an event where many of the field did not start.

The two-day event had been fraught with a series of problems, firstly because both events were originally postponed, then, when a slot on the calendar was found, the problem of finding two courses free of road works in one weekend had to be sorted.

In the end, the little-used Pont course hosted the 25, while Saturday's 10 used the Boghouse to Sandy Bay.

The postponement and rescheduling in the events caused several riders to clash with the Ferryhill Wheelers race.

Keith Murray, down for the 25 only, was Walker's main contender to fail to start, as was Derwentside's David Bell, who opted to ride the Ferryhill event.

Young Derwentsider Matthew Coates scuppered his overall chances when he went off course on Saturday and, as a result, scraped into the top 10, redeeming himself in Sunday's 25 as he was one of only four riders to finish under an hour.

Sheffield's Wayne Randle beat a full field to win the Ferryhill race on the Craythorne-Knayton course.

Bell's decision to ride the event was justified as he pushed former international Randle to 2-18, with the unseeded Shaun Tyson third.
