Oh to be a Premiership footballer. The fame, the money, the adulation. The blatant disregard for the rules that everyone has to follow.

In this modern age, celebrity footballers are held up as gods, with Beckham holding court over them all.

But lest we forget that these people are actually mere mortals. They eat, sleep and drink like the rest of us. Some not as much, while some are at the far end of the scale (Wayne Rooney, Gazza in his Mars bar-chomping pomp).

And like the majority of us they go to work. They clock in, get their orders from the gaffer and at the end of the week pick up their wages.

As difficult as I know it is, try and put aside the fact that their factories are modern stadia filled with tens of thousands adoring fans chanting their names, and their wages are way beyond any of us could dare to dream about, and stick to the point that they have jobs.

Within anyone's chosen career one is entitled to move about ( indeed I actively encourage it. There's something about people who stay at one place for 30 years that I just don't trust.

They must be on a strict police curfew and not allowed to leave the county or something. Or perhaps they can't move house because the new owners will find the bodies wrapped in newspapers when they come to convert the attic.

But when people do move jobs, at least they have the courtesy to be discreet. To find a quiet corner of the office for that informal chat before filling in the application form at home, upgrading your GCSE results from Es to As (let's face it after 16 years who cares, and if anyone does care, the certificates were destroyed in a fire).

Should you be granted an interview, you take a day's holiday, do your best to avoid being seen by anyone from work, and tell your bosses that you spent your day putting shelves up. …
