When Shiremoor angler Paul Lunn fished as a guest of the Railway AC at Newton he scooped first prize.

Using crab to tempt his prey, Lunn took the honours with five fish for 13lb.

At the end of the match, Paul drove across to Arbroath to fish their open and managed second place with 25lb 11oz, made up of nine cod and one coal fish taken on crab and mussel.

Closer to home, sport has been generally at a standstill for boat angling due to the bad weather which somehow seems to fall at the weekends when the majority of people want to go out, with the best of the weather being midweek.

Shore angling has been mainly confined to small codling between 1lb and 2lb from Dunstanburgh, Cullernose and Cresswell where Jade Nicholson took four cod using crab and rag, best fish 8lb.

Cambois Rocks has also given a few cod average 2lb best reported 3 1/2lb.

Blyth Pier still giving a few mackerel in calmer conditions also coalfish and occasional small cod. …
