AN INVESTIGATION was under way today after security and hygiene breaches were allegedly exposed at the catering firm which supplies British Airways.

An undercover reporter with bogus references obtained a job as a worker for Gate Gourmet, currently in a dispute-with hundreds of sacked staff which led to chaos at Heathrow this month. The investigation claims Gate Gourmet employed the reporter via an agency as a casual worker without proper background checks, and that the firm's security staff failed to conduct compulsory searches.

As part of his duties, the reporter placed security seals on loaded trolleys, to be broken during flights. This meant it would have been possible to smuggle explosives into the plant and place them in a trolley.

The reporter says he only went through an eight-hour vetting process and was able to walk onto his shift with a telephone, tape recorder and camera. He was paid [pounds sterling]6 an hour through recruitment agency Blue Arrow in Uxbridge. …
