Middleburg Wrestling Coach Ready; but He Knows Challenges of Leading the Team

Adam Bolger is the youngest head coach among five Clay County high schools that offer wrestling, but the 20-year-old North Carolina native doesn't give it much thought. He'd rather spend his time and energy preparing his Middleburg team for the upcoming season.

Bolger replaces Steve Litner, who spent one year with the Broncos before leaving to pursue a law degree. That makes Bolger the school's third head coach in three years, but Bolger, who was an assistant coach under Litner, says the turnover hasn't had an adverse affect on a program that has features returning seniors Logan Wasdin, Caleb Frisbee and Logan Register.

"We thought it would, but actually, it was the kids' choice that I became coach," he said. "I've stuck by them. They believe in what I teach."

School athletic director Alan Powers can vouch for that. Powers said he hired the former high school standout based on his performance under Litner.

"Steve recommended him highly," Powers said. "A lot of our wrestlers said they enjoyed working with him, and some of the [Middleburg] graduates who came back [to help] spoke of him highly."

The endorsements are nice, but Bolger admits he gets nervous about taking over a program that sent four wrestlers to last year's state tournament after finishing district runner-up and third in the 10-team St. Johns River Athletic Conference.

"You're looking at the moves you're showing them [at practice] and you're asking yourself, 'Is this right?' " he said. "At night I'm reviewing every move I show. I just want to get it right."

Growing up with a father who coached three sports has been a big help, and he draws heavily from his four years on the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School team in Coral Springs, where he was a three-time state qualifier as a heavyweight after his family moved to Florida. …
