A Teesside lad has won his dream of playing for England in the World Cup - at table football.

Teenager Jonathan Bryan, 13, originally from Norton, is one of five youngsters representing England in the game known competitively as Sports Table Football, but better known worldwide as Subbuteo.

Jonathan was travelling to the Belgian town of Tournai this weekend to tackle players from more than 20 countries.

The Teesside lad started playing Sports Table Football a year ago because of his dad Simon's love of the game.

Since then, he has racked up excellent results in the East Midland Alliance league.

Simon, 37, an RAF corporal who is currently based with the family at RAF Marham in Norfolk, said his son has made stunning progress in the last 12 months.

He said: "Jonathan has been to a few tournaments over the last year and massed enough ranking points to make the England team.

"I have to say I'm a bit proud and a bit jealous. …
