I HAVE to admit that as I sat down to watch this documentary, it was with low expectations. After all, the Beslan school siege was well covered when it took place a year ago. And only last month we had a major Dispatches documentary on the subject. What more could there be to say?

Well, how wrong I was. This is a compelling and poignant piece of work. And if you are - like me - slightly put off by the subject matter, please don't be. The interviews with the children captured in the siege will draw you in, captivate you, and then break your heart.

Beslan, you will remember, is the town in Russia where Chechen separatist terrorists stormed the school, taking 1,200 people hostage and holding them in a bomb-lined gym for three days.

The siege ended in chaos with more than 300 dead. This documentary talks to the children involved. Their simple, naive accounts of the horrific events inside the school are revealing, moving and, at times, like a nightmarish version of Children Say The Cutest Things. …
