Tony hobson finally stormed into the league's record books when he helped edge Riverdale Spitfires closer to the Division One title with an eight-wicket victory at Stobswood.

Only the paucity of Blagdon's total the week before delayed Hobson's crowing as the league's all-time record scorer when his 51 not out left him a tantalising nine runs short of G Gophal's season's total of 1,368, set in 1995 when playing for Newcastle City.

However, he had no such problems when faced with a target of 164-5 set by Stobswood, thanks largely to an innings of 72 by Ian Turner, and his unbeaten 106 raised the bar to 1,465 runs at an incredible average of 162.77 compared to Gophal's 97.72.

Riverdale secretary Jo Loring said: "It is an unbelievable achievement as Tony has played in only 21 league games and still has two more to go against Northern Social and Bates Cottages.

"We would love to have him back next season when we are in the Premier Division. …
