Paul casey has been longing for a fresh start to his golf career ( and this week will do nicely.

The Omega European Masters in Switzerland is the first event of the 12-month Ryder Cup qualifying campaign and it presents Casey, one of the heroes of Detroit, with the chance to put his summer slump behind him.

Winner of the World Cup with Luke Donald last November, the 27-year-old from Surrey has dropped from 29th in the world to 72nd.

It means that 12 months on from being one of Europe's top 12 he is not currently in the 10-strong Britain and Ireland side for the Seve Trophy at Wynyard in three weeks' time.

Nor is he lining up with Donald and seven other Europeans in the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth in a fortnight. And nor does he have a place in the American Express World Championship in San Francisco at the start of next month.

Or qualify at present for the season-ending Volvo Masters at Valderrama.

However, after a string of missed cuts and high scores there were good signs in the fact that he played all four rounds of last month's US PGA championship and then was 19th at the NEC World Championship in Akron the following week. …
