A much-loved Thornaby beauty spot has been shortlisted for a national award - but it's not a park, it's a cemetery!

Thornaby Cemetery is shortlisted for the national Cemetery of the Year Awards which aim to discover Britain's best cemeteries, churchyards and crematoria.

The awards are designed to encourage and reward high standards among Britain's cemeteries and to raise public awareness of the role they play in the community.

Thornaby Cemetery, which opened in 1869 and is managed by Stockton Council, was assessed in June by CYA judges on everything from design and maintenance to facilities, choice of services for the bereaved and future plans.

Future plans for the 53-acre cemetery include a woodland burial area.

Jayne Robins, bereavement services manager for Stockton Council, said there will also be the opportunity for families to place a metallic memorial leaf on a memorial sculpture within a tranquil area of the woodland site. …
