Tremlett's nerve war

England will carefully monitor Chris Tremlett's reaction to the big occasion today as they consider their bowling options for next week's Ashes decider against Australia at the Oval.

The selectors, comprising chairman David Graveney, coach Duncan Fletcher and Geoff Miller, are due to discuss the squad for next week's final npower Test tonight before the official announcement in the morning.

By then they will have received a medical report on Simon Jones, who remains a doubt after injuring his right ankle during the three-wicket fourth Test victory at Trent Bridge and has been having regular oxygen tank treatment this week in an effort to speed up his recovery.

They will also have a better idea of how Hampshire seamer Chris Tremlett, the favourite to replace Jones, can handle the pressure of expectations on a big occasion following his appearance in today's C&G Trophy final against Warwickshire at Lord's. Tremlett is in pole position to make his Test debut after being named in all four Ashes squads this summer without making the starting line-up.

But he will need to impress the selectors more than he has this week during Hampshire's championship victory over Warwickshire, when he recorded second innings figures of one for 49 from seven overs.

"It's a great opportunity if Simon isn't fit for someone to come into the team and make a real name for themselves," stressed captain Michael Vaughan.

"Chris Tremlett has been in the squad this summer and he has a great opportunity this weekend to show everybody what he can do in the final."

For all Tremlett's assets, he combines pace with extra bounce from his 6ft 7in frame, he has struggled to present a case for inclusion since becoming involved in England's squads on a regular basis. …
