Opener Matthew Hayden is backing Shane Warne and Australia's battling qualities to deprive England of the Ashes victory they are so tantalisingly close to claiming.

Australia must win the fifth Test, which starts at The Oval on Thursday, to stop England taking the series, and Hayden believes that Warne is the man for all occasions.

Warne took a well-earned rest at the weekend while Australia and opponents Essex were plundering more than a thousand runs between them in their two-day game on a near-perfect batting track at Chelmsford.

But, even if Australia are faced with the same conditions at The Oval, Hayden is confident that Australia's spin king can weave his magic one more time to pull them through.

"I think Warney comes into play no matter what conditions we play under," he said.

"This has obviously been a second-day wicket but I would have liked to see it on day three and day four.

"It's easier to score runs in the first few days, but I think we've got enough people in our hutch to certainly concern England, and Warney comes into his own on those type of wickets. …
